Description

Details

Originally published in 1984, The Land Question is a comprehensive analysis of changes in the agrarian structure of Bengal in the first half of the twentieth century. It explores the relation between the conflicts over land rights and the struggle for power in the Bengal countryside. The emphasis is on identifying the uneven development of these contradictions in the structure of domination and subordination, in time as well as in geographical space. The volume offers provocative views on the role of the colonial state, peasant movements, political parties and communal politics in Bengal. The volume also contains a long and controversial methodological preface in which Chatterjee discusses various aspects of the Marxist method of studying historical change in the context of modern Indian politics.

The present reprint includes a new preface by Chatterjee underlining the continued relevance of this work in the light of subsequent researches on the subject.
